One day I was in Bird’s Surf Shed, here in San Diego, and he was a little bit on the grumpy side (it’s not like him to be grumpy). I told him to go to his happy place and he immediately began to smile. I asked where his happy place was. He answered that is was Fiji. When I asked for more details, he went on to describe the epic surf break at Restaurants in Tavarua.

I decided to build this piece depicting the scene at Restaurants using only wood. No paint. No stain. No stone or sea shells, either. Only wood.

It took me a long time to find just the right lumber to make it work. It was worth the time.

This is one of my favorite boards, and I’m glad Bird has it. He is a good man with a big heart.
